Excellence in quantum innovation

Manchester has a strong pedigree in the development of quantum science over the last century, from Rutherford's work on the atom, to the isolation of graphene.

Our current research activity is no exception, with over 60 academics driving world-leading research into current and future quantum technologies.

Our work covers all aspects of quantum science and engineering, including information and computation, photonics, advanced materials, quantum chemistry, and beyond.

Training quantum scientists and engineers

The CQSE has a key focus on training the next generation of scientists and engineers who will deliver the quantum technology 2.0 revolution.

The CQSE’s researchers deliver quantum science and engineering teaching and training across our student and researcher portfolio from undergraduate through to early career researcher development.

A front-door for industrial collaboration

Our world-leading research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities.

Manchester has extensive capability in nanofabrication, metrology, and electrical/optical analysis established within the National Graphene Institute and Photon Science Institute, supported by electron beam imaging facilities and the National EPSRC Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy facility.

The CQSE acts as a central contact for SMEs to multinational organisations. Access to these facilities and our wider expertise is directly available to our collaborators across industry.
